New bento box

My friend gave me a really nice wooden bento box, so I packed it up for lunch with nishime, gobo kinpira, tsukemono, and temari sushi.  I can't wait until lunchtime!

Hinamatsuri sushi cake

I made a sushi cake for Hinamatsuri.  I started with gohan in three layers - with aonori, plain, and with imitation crab, to make three colors.  I topped it with cucumbers and flowers made from maguro and salmon.

乳団子

I made my friend's mom's chichidango recipe, and it was really good!!

The kanji for chichidango is 乳団子, and it seems to literally translate as boobs dumpling!  Seems so crude for a Girl's Day treat!  Plus, they don't really look like boobs.

乳団子

I was talking to my friend about chi chi dango, and today she brought some that she made fresh!!  She also gave me a copy of the recipe that her mom hand wrote for her, so it's very special.

It was SO good!!  Very soft and very tasty.  I think I will try using her mom's recipe for Hinamatsuri this weekend.

The birth of kanashii shamoji

This weekend, I bought チャハンのもと.  I made it on Sunday morning.  First I stir fried the たまご.  Then I added the ごはん and チャハンのもと, but I thought it needed more green onions.  I added green onions and it was perfect!

After I served and put away the leftovers, I turned over my shamoji that I used to cook, and saw that some of the green onions got stuck to the bottom.  It looked like this:

I thought it looked so sad, but it made me smile.

Shamoji told me not to be sad for him.  He told me that his purpose is to make people smile with his sad face.  So I started this blog in hopes of making people smile.  Shamoji thinks that if we smile every day, then life will be good.  I hope your life is good!
